About Honea Path P.H. Church

A Brief History...

Honea Path Pentecostal Holiness Church originated in 1918 through the dedicated efforts of a small group of Pentecostal believers in the mill village surrounding the Chiquola Textile Manufacturing Plant.  Their commonality of blue collar work experience in the Mill and sharing of strong family ties in this close knit community coupled with an intense hunger for God resulted in the establishment of a vibrant church where the gifts of the Spirit could flow freely.  Organized by the founding pastor, the Reverend George Cason, he along with a core group of Pentecostal Christians began meeting regularly in the home of Mr. Arthur Wright on Kay Street in Honea Path.  Through the humble beginnings of small home group meetings conducted in various members’ homes and even outside at times, the church began to flourish and impact its community for Christ. In 1919, the congregation moved into its first public location in the old Hall building (owned by the Chiquola Mill) on Beacham Street.  This facility was used by various denominational groups for public worship at that time. Later in August of 1936, a small white, wood frame church was erected on Pitts Street.  This location has provided a permanent home for the current structure now standing at the corner of Pitts and Cox Streets.

Just two years prior to the establishment of the church's permanent location, the Chiquola Mill, which provided employment for most of the residents of Honea Path, made national news in September 6, 1934 as a result of a labor strike during efforts to establish a Labor Union at the plant.   The intensity of this event occurring during the Great Depression resulted in the killing of seven employees in the streets surrounding the Mill and left a deep wound in the community.  This church along with others in the town sought to bring reconciliation and healing to the hearts of the people of Honea Path.  Through this tragic event that shook the surrounding area, however, child labor laws in America were directly impacted and changed for the better.

As the church continued to grow, additional classrooms were built on in 1942 and facility improvements were made.  As many souls were saved and the Lord added to the church, the need for a larger sanctuary to accommodate the growth became obvious.  In 1955, a more modern brick structure facing Cox Street with a sanctuary that could accommodate approximately 450 people was built.  This all became possible through financial assistance from Chiquola Mill along with the generous giving of her membership.  In the 1970’s another growth spurt resulted in the addition of more educational space and a new enlarged fellowship hall.  During its 90 years of history, the church has been led by thirteen different senior pastors who have led the church into each new phase of growth.

Like virtually most churches, it has experienced its own seasons of decline and growth.  However, Honea Path Pentecostal Church, as it is commonly known in the area, continues to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!  Through effective outreach efforts, all generations of people regardless of racial or social backgrounds find this church to be true to its mission as it continues living for, loving and serving Christ and others!  Today, the church experiences worship through a blended style of both traditional and contemporary music along with relevant Spirit-anointed preaching and teaching of the Word of God.  Lives are being changed as discipleship is our focused ministry.  Our desire is to not merely see numbers and buildings increase, but ultimately to see more dedicated followers of Jesus Christ making a positive difference for the kingdom of God wherever we live, work, and recreate.
